Dalat, a city nestled in the cool climate of the Lâm Viên Plateau, stands out against tropical Vietnam with its unique nature and architecture. It was here, during the colonial era, that the French established a “mountain resort,” giving the city a European character that has endured to this day.

1. Basic Information about Dalat.

Dalat is located in South-Central Vietnam, 300 km north of Ho Chi Minh City. The town lies in the southern part of the Central Highlands—on the Lâm Viên Plateau, giving it a mountainous character and a cooler climate compared to the tropical regions of Vietnam. Due to its mild temperatures year-round, Dalat is often referred to as the “City of Eternal Spring.”

Where does the name Đà Lạt come from, and what does it mean? The name originates from the language of the local Lạch minority. The phrase derives from “Đạ Lạch,” meaning “River of the Lạch,” or “River of the Lạch People,” which is also associated with the Latin acronym “Dat Aliis Laetitiam Aliis Temperiem,” translating to “it gives joy to some, coolness to others.”

How is Dalat pronounced? The pronunciation is straightforward: Da Lat.

How big is Dalat? Compared to other cities in Vietnam, Dalat is relatively small, with a population of approximately 250,000 in 2024. The area is rich in numerous lakes, flower farms, coffee plantations, and strawberry fields. It’s a popular tourist destination, especially for visitors from Asian countries, including Vietnamese themselves.

For Google search purposes, I use the simplified spelling Dalat, while the correct form is Đà Lạt.

Interesting Facts – What is Dalat Known For?

City of Eternal Spring – Dalat is known for its unique, moderate climate (19-29°C), uncommon in tropical regions. This is due to the city’s location in the southern part of the Central Highlands, on the Lâm Viên Plateau. The town sits at an elevation of 1,500 meters above sea level.

Founded in the 20th Century – The city was established during the French colonial era as a “mountain resort” for relaxation and as an escape from the heat in other parts of Vietnam. Therefore, the city’s architecture is heavily inspired by European styles.

Flower Capital of Vietnam – In Dalat, flowers such as hydrangeas, roses, lilies, and chrysanthemums are cultivated.

Nature – Numerous Lakes and Waterfalls – Both in Dalat and its surroundings, there are many waterfalls and lakes. For this reason, Dalat is famous for its picturesque landscapes.

Strawberry Cultivation – Thanks to its unique climate, Dalat is known for strawberry farming, which is unusual for tropical regions.

Weasel Coffee – In this region, one can find not only coffee plantations but also the production of exclusive kopi luwak coffee, created through the fermentation of beans in the digestive system of the Asian palm civet, a small fruit-eating mammal.

3. When and How Long to Visit Dalat – Weather and Recommendations.

Rainy Season in Dalat:

April, May, June, July, August, September, and October – during these months, temperatures are significantly cooler, and rainfall occurs almost daily. November is the coldest month, with temperatures dropping as low as 19°C.

How Long to Plan Your Stay in Dalat?

I’ll answer this question in two ways:

  1. For those with limited time in Asia or Vietnam, I recommend spending 3 to 5 days in Dalat.
  2. For those who have more time, such as digital nomads, I suggest spending 1 to 2 weeks in Dalat.

In 3–5 days, you can optimally explore the main and most interesting attractions available in Dalat and its surroundings. Most attractions are located within the city limits, with only a few requiring over an hour’s drive outside Dalat.

How to Get to Dalat and Move Around the City?

Vietnam is a long country, but it’s very well-connected. There are several transportation options, with choices depending on budget and comfort preferences. You can choose from the standard options: plane, bus, and train. The most popular platform for booking transportation is 12go.asia.

Where is the airport in Dalat located?

Lien Khuong Airport is situated about 30 km south of the city center. Transportation from the airport to the city center requires a taxi, with a cost ranging from 150,000 to 250,000 VND (~6-10 USD). I recommend using the Grab app, as on-site transport is more expensive than booking through the app.

For domestic travel, I believe it’s best to use sleeper buses. Why?

  • Sleeper buses are modern and safe.
  • Numerous connections are available with a wide range of departure times.
  • Traveling at night saves time compared to airport check-ins.
  • Environmentally more friendly (airplanes have high emissions).
  • It’s budget-friendly – transport is very cheap, avoiding high taxi costs from the airport to the city center.

Dalat – Where to Book Accommodation?

Dalat is a relatively small city, and distances from the city’s edges to its center are short. Therefore, I would base the choice of accommodation primarily on price, standard, and views.

  • I recommend Districts 7, 8, 9, and 10, as they are slightly farther from the city center of Dalat – it’s quieter here, with beautiful panoramic views of the city.
  • Meanwhile, in Districts 1, 2, and 3, there is more traffic, but they offer a direct view of Xuan Huong Lake.
